What happens to my rubbish?
Any waste we cannot recycle goes to landfill. In 2005/2006 we sent 36,000 tonnes of waste to landfill.
Why we want to avoid sending waste to landfill
- waste disposal in landfill costs money
- landfill can produce dangerous pollutants, such as leachate, which is harmful to both wildlife and the environment
- landfill cannot be built upon or used to grow crops due to contamination of the land
- landfill can cause noise and visual pollution
- we are running out of available landfill space in which to dispose of our waste
Government legislation about waste sent to landfill
New European legislation requires a 25 % reduction in the amount sent to landfill by 2009/10. The Council will face heavy penalties if it does not meet this target.
How you can help
You can help reduce the amount sent to landfill if you
