Council and democracy

Freedom of information

What is the Freedom of Information Act 2000?

The Act requires all public authorities to be open with information and therefore gives a general right of access to all types of recorded information held by the council.  It sets out exemptions from that right and places various obligations upon the council, one of which is to produce a Freedom of Information Policy. You can view/download this document from the menu on the right.

Any person may make a request to the council for information (see contact details below). The council must inform the applicant whether it holds that information and, subject to exemptions, supply the information.

For further information, please visit the Information Commissioner’s website.

Information Guide

The guide provides an overview of council information and signposts to the information available on this website. Go to the information guide section.

Charging

We wish to make as much information as possible available free of charge.  However, some publications have a cover charge.  Where photocopies of documents are required, these will be charged for.

Publication scheme

The publication scheme summarises the types of information the council makes available. We adopted a new publication scheme on 4 December 2008, to take effect from 1 January 2009. You can view/download this document from the menu on the right.

Re-use of public sector information

A further set of regulations covers the re-use of public sector information in a way that was not originally intended.  For more information, see our website notice.

You can also find information on the website of the Office for Public Sector Information.

Environmental Information

Access to information that is classed as Environmental Information falls under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004.  Although there are some differences, you may request information from us in just the same way as for a request under Freedom of Information Act.  For more information follow the link below:
